mathematical calculations.
The fourteenth floor hallway she walked up and down all the time
to access her hidden room was longer than the hallway on the
twentieth floor.
Damn it, that s it! The twentieth floor hallway has to be about
four feet shorter than the fourteenth floor. I bet they ve got another
doorway to the other side of the building and have more rooms there.
Including a computer room. Shit! I wonder if they do sleep in coffins
or something! I never really considered that. Well, they can just tell
me all about it after this party is over
A faint flicker of movement behind the fountain caused Yolanda
to stop thinking and pay attention. Silently, she stepped a little closer
to the fountain.
A big man in dark clothing burst from the bushes and ran to the
seat. He sucker punched the man Yolanda didn t know and grabbed
Green. Yolanda pressed the speed dial on her cell phone, which was
tucked inside her bra. She didn t have time to talk, but knew Luke, the
head of the security detail, would come looking for her when she
didn t reply.
The man who d been hit slid off the seat and landed on the
ground. He wasn t moving. Yolanda ran forward, grabbed the
attacker s arms, and used her hips to push Green away from him.
Green struggled to pull his arm free while Yolanda used both hands
on the man s right hand, in which a knife had suddenly appeared. Just
as she forced his right arm back and away from Green, he let go of
Green with his left arm and swung a heavy punch into her abdomen.
The force was so great she instantly lost all her breath and knew her
ribs were cracked, if not broken.
Interfering bitch. I thought I d gotten rid of you once before, he
snarled, wrapping his arm around her neck and holding the knife in
that hand while gripping Green by the necktie with the other.

Yolanda s chest was a solid wall of pain. She could hardly
breathe, and she really wanted to vomit. It was all she could do to
hold it in. Then the words of her first self-defense teacher came to her.
Anything can be a weapon. Use it.
Yolanda turned her head as far as she could to the side, opened
her mouth, and threw up all down the front of the attacker.
Bitch! he screamed, letting go of both her and Green and
jumping backward in disgust.
 Run! gasped Yolanda to Green.
He took off toward the house.
Then the bushes exploded with men. Luke and a skinny security
guard blocked the attacker, one of the night guards grabbed Green,
and Atal pulled her to him.
Are you hurt? Did he touch you?
He s got a knife, she replied wheezily, still trying to get her
breath back.
The skinny guard frisked the attacker, Luke snapped handcuffs on
him, and they all started to move back toward the house. Several more
men appeared and ran to the man who d been hit, who was just
pulling himself back up onto the seat.
Atal swung Yolanda into his arms and kissed her. Now answer
the question. You re hurt. Where?
Ribs. He punched me. I ll be fine when I can breathe again. Put
me down.
Everything was quite chaotic for a while, but the police knew all
about Mr. Green and his problems, so their questions were minimal.
He said he d met me before. I wonder if he was involved in the
attempted kidnapping last year.
Yolanda gave the police a basic outline of the facts and the
contact details for her former boss, then stepped into the ambulance
where the paramedics had just finished checking the man who d been
sucker punched, Mr. José Garcia, so the paramedics could check her
ribs. She emerged half an hour later to tell a worried Atal and
48 Berengaria Brown
Tsadowq who d arrived, Probably just cracked, but I d better go get
some X-rays.
An agitated Mark Parker handed out business cards to the
paramedics. Any costs, anything at all, I ll pay. If it wasn t for
Yolanda, Green would be kidnapped or dead. Anything she needs,
anything at all, you see she gets it.
What about Mr. Garcia? Yolanda asked. But he was nowhere
around.
He and Mr. Green are back inside the house, said Mark.
Uh-huh, said Yolanda softly to Atal and Tsadowq. And I bet
Mr. Garcia s name isn t Garcia any more than Green s is Green. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
